Above, one of a few images (again based on a failed painting) that I planned to print as layers, then sell as an edition of "prints."
The image would be broken into four layers: a light gray layer on top, two dark gray layers in the middle, and a black background.
The original idea was to layer sheets of hard foam (with a paper-like surface) with the holes cut out by a laser cutting machine. But not only would that approach not work with this particular image -- note that the top layer could not be a single piece -- the laser cutting was too expensive (a few hundred dollars per 20" x 30" sheet?) to experiment with.
So I tested the idea by printing each layer on acetate, then sticking it to a sheet of clear plexiglass. The test looked good from a certain angle, but was not what I'd hoped for.
